Great news -- all USD 418 buildings recognized for excellence
By CAROL DREILING, Sentinel Staff Writer
A special audience, including administrators and teaching staff from every building in the district, attended the regular meeting of the Unified School District 418 on Oct. 25.
Members of that audience were recognized by the board in the report prepared by Dr. Randy Watson, assistant superintendent - instruction, on State Assessments Standard of Excellence.
"We have great news," Watson told the board. "All of our buildings are recognized for reaching the Standard of Excellence in last year's state assessments in reading. This is very rare for a district."
He described research he has completed that compared this district with 19 other districts, including the county schools, schools of comparable size such as Andover, Maize, Goddard and Salina as well as Olathe, Blue Valley, Topeka and Tonganoxie schools. That research shows that no other district in the county or in the surrounding area have had all their buildings and all their schools meeting the Standard of Excellence in reading.

"My hat is off to them," Watson said. "It is a tribute to you -- the school board, the staff and the parents of these students."
Accepting banners from the district and certificates from the state were the principals and teachers from the following schools: Eisenhower Elementary School -- achieved the Standard of Excellence in fifth-grade reading and writing and in fourth-grade math; Lincoln Elementary School -- achieved the Standard of Excellence in fifth-grade writing and reading; Roosevelt Elementary School -- achieved the Standard of Excellence in fifth-grade reading and writing and in fourth-grade math; Washington Elementary School-- achieved the Standard of Excellence in fifth-grade reading and writing and in fourth-grade math; McPherson Middle School -- achieved the Standard of Excellence in eighth-grade reading; and McPherson High School -- achieved the Standard of Excellence in 11th-grade reading.
