Bullpups rule AVCTL picks in volleyball

McPherson High's domination of the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League's Division I this season was reflected in the postseason honors announced this week.
The Bullpups' Marlies Gipson and Kayla Stout shared the AVCTL's Player of the Year honor along with Maize's Nicole Vogt, while the Bullpups' Cheryl Malm was named Coach of the Year.
Gipson and Stout were joined on the first team by teammate Ashley Sweat.
Others on the first team were Vogt, Jessica Coleman of Salina South, Tessa Early of Salina Central and Megan Jacobs of Derby.
MHS dominated the second team as well, as Lindsey Oliver, Lauren Russell and Melissa Watson were selected, giving the Bullpups six selections among the top 15.
Others on the second team were Laura Divine of Hutchinson, Abby Giersch and Stacy Puvogel of Salina South, and Kelly Larson and Lindsey Stuart of Maize.
Honorable mention selections included Jenny Baxa of Salina Central, Kara Foster of Derby, Andrea Gordon and Audrey Schellenberg of Maize, Amy Hoppock of Salina South and Kylie Naccarato of Hutchinson.
Malm was named Coach of the Year after the Bullpups were a perfect 10-0 in Division I of the AVCTL. MHS was 38-1 heading into state and finished with a 39-3 record, including a 31-match winning streak, both school records.
