GREAT COMEBACK YEAR --
Of all the McPherson High sports, none toil in relative obscurity more
than the boys and girls cross country teams.
Sure, they have their one home meet a year. But other than the few faithful
that go on the road with the team to their meets, it's a group that is
out of the mainstream.
And it's also a sport that probably requires more physical training than
any other. Can you imagine the miles these young runners put in week after
week, sometimes in the blistering heat of summer and now as the state
meet approaches, the crisp, cool air of autumn?
A year ago, both Bullpup teams were shy on numbers. There were many meets
where MHS did not field full teams, running just as individuals.
But Bullpup coaches Kevin Reese and Chad Brake got a few more numbers
out this year and the reward is a trip to Lawrence Saturday for the state
meet at Rim Rock Farm.
Both Bullpup teams have had great years and should do well in the team
races, not to mention the individual races. Nick Nowak was third last
year for the MHS boys and even though he was third at the regional, he
has the ability to win it. Sarah Ferrell and Jill Nowak were 1-2 at the
regional and would like to finish in the top 10, as the field is strong.
