122nd commencement

In an address laced with humor and interspersed with wise advice
for the 122nd graduating class of McPherson High School, Dr. Earl
Reem, commencement speaker at the Roundhouse Saturday evening, told
each member of the Class of 2005 to accept his/her diploma and "for
goodness sake, do something with it."
Reem delivered his light-hearted, fast-paced presentation, including
bits of magic and a plethora of witty sayings.
He pointed out that the hat which each graduate wears -- the mortar
board -- is a symbol of building, and he urged each graduate to
build lives, castles and dreams. "Miracles are everywhere,"
he said, "give yourself permission for greatness, you have
no idea what you will achieve."
"Graduates are the young builders of the world," he said,
and asked the class and the audience to look around them and recognize
all those in the education field for the work they had done to bring
them to the place at which they were at that moment.
"Remember everything your mother ever taught you," he
continued, citing the trite, "always wear clean underwear in
case you get hit by a truck," and "today is the first
day of the rest of your life," to wise counsel such as, "think
broadly, care enormously and don't hold grudges."
He counseled them to never fry bacon in the nude, never lick a steak
knife, never buy a fur coat from a man being chased by a naked bear,
or buy jewelry from a man wearing asbestos gloves. He said to remember
that the IRS has no sense of humor and that it is a marvelous destiny
they would be fulfilling.
"A future president may be in this class, and she needs all
the support and encouragement she can get," he quipped, drawing
a round of applause from the audience. Among numerous other "pearls
of wisdom," he advised them to "do the most with what
you have, always lock your cars in Kansas or people will fill them
with zucchini; always forgive yourself, and to try something new
and different."
"Don't let anyone kill your highest dreams," he admonished
the seniors. "I wish you success in all of them. Stay fired
up. Your diploma is unique in the history of the world and it will
make a difference ... so for goodness sake, do something with it!"
His concluding statement was, "Ready -- begin!"
Reviewing the last four years, three of the four valedictorians,
Grace Rizza, Jenna Rader and Meghan Cotton, gave a joint presentation,
remembering how their time in high school was spent.
Alison Vo, the fourth valedictorian, related that it was vital to
consider the value of education and the impact it has on lives.
She expressed her gratitude to family, friends, the education system
and community of McPherson, as well as an appreciation for America
and the opportunities, freedoms and liberty offered to pursue their
dreams.
"We have been given the opportunity to excel and thrive in
a free civilization," she said. "That is the magnitude
of the effects of education."
Alex Pavlovsky, salutatorian, noted some memorable moments from
the class' past, concluding with, "There are three kinds of
people -- those who let it happen, those who make it happen and
those who wonder what happened. Let's be the kind who make things
happen," she said.
Prior to the presentation of diplomas, Lew Faust, MHS principal,
recognized Robert Shannon, outgoing USD 418 superintendent, for
his 16 years of service in McPherson, and wished him the best as
he moves to Manhattan to assume responsibilities as superintendent
for the Manhattan schools.
