McPherson's Level 4 Gym Pups recently came away with the state championship.
The 16-member team finished with a season-high score of 114.275 points
out of a possible 120. In what was the closest finish in recent history,
the Gym Pups won by .25 points and the third place team was .50 points
behind.
Several of the Level
4 girls also came away with individual state championships or a runner-up
finish.
At age 7, Rhiannon Vieyra was the all-around champion with a score of
38.225 out of 40. She also was the state champion on the balance beam
with a 9.55 and on the uneven bars with a 9.6.
Also in this age group, Katyln Reifschneider was the state champion on
the vault with a 9.8 and in the floor exercise with a 9.45 . She also
was second in all-around with a score of 37.75.
At age 9, Paige Yowell was the state champ on the vault with a 9.675,
while at age 11, Clarissa Bryant was the champ in the floor (9.5).
At age 9, Anna Lindholm was state runner-up in all-around with a 37.7,
coming up with a second, two thirds and a sixth. Also in this age group,
Marisa Miller was sixth in all-around (37.325).
At age 10, Tana Myers was seventh in all-around with a 36.65. At age 11,
Sophie Simon was fifth in all-around with a 36.9.
The rest of the Level 4 championship team, that averaged 35.925, are Amanda
Urban, Jordan Babcock, Jacee Weinbrenner, Courtney Reiss, Jenny Likes,
Ashley Yowell, Alex Curl and Brigitte Wilhelm.
The Level 5 team also had some good showings. Leading the way was Heidi
Heidebrecht, age 10, who had a second, fifth and 10th for fourth place
in all-around with a 36.65. Other strong performances were Courtney Pavlik
(13th all-around with 35.075), Tiffany Snyder (fifth in vault) and Taylor
Stites (eighth in bars).
The optional team had strong showings by Anna Eigruber (fourth in bars,
fifth in vault and sixth in all-around with 36.125), Tashley Snyder (seventh
in floor, eighth in bars, eighth in all-around with 34.225) and Corbin
Blomberg (second in vault with a 9.4).
The coaching staff was extremely pleased with the team's performance.
According to team spokesman Curtis Crough, the team practices year-round
and puts in as many as 12 hours a week during the school year and as many
as 15 in the summer.
This summer, the girls will start working on new skills in hoping to move
up a level. The team has 27 girls, but hopes to have more this summer.
