Describing
Carol Sabatos' sense of humor and interest in children, Lincoln
Elementary School principal Debbie Hamm introduced the special
education teacher to the board.
|
"She
is truly an advocate for children," Hamm said. "She promotes
her students and gets them involved in school in an appropriate and
beneficial way."
Sabatos was given special recognition at Monday's USD 418 Board of
Education meeting to acknowledge her selection as a Kansas State Department
of Education Horizon Award winner for 2004-05. The award program identifies
and recognizes exemplary first-year teachers.
The Kansas Horizon Award is a regional competition; those regions
correspond to the state's four U.S. congressional district. Four elementary
classroom and four secondary classroom teachers are selected per region
for a total of 32 teachers.
Sabatos has worked in the district since August 1997, first as an
instructional aide at Roosevelt Elementary School and currently as
an interrelated teacher at Lincoln Elementary School. According to
Hamm, students in Sabatos' classroom have done well both academically
and socially.
Following the certificate presentation by BOE president Bob Tolle,
Sabatos spoke to the board.
"Laughter makes my job different from others," she said.
"In many situations, people have to learn to laugh. In my classroom,
we laugh to learn." |
