Softball Pups
lose twice
McPherson
Sentinel
April 3, 2005
WINFIELD -- It was inexperience against
experience Friday in the softball season opener for McPherson High.
The Bullpups, with a lot of new players at new positions, lost both ends
of the double dip, 6-2 and 13-1 to a Winfield team that returns most of
its players, including its ace pitcher.
In the opener, MHS coach Christy Doile said a good job was turned in by
Stephanie Bunch in relief. Bunch worked 4 2/3 innings in relief of Amber
Gasper and gave up just one run. Gasper had one of the two RBI, with Abby
Meagher getting the other.
In the second game, the Vikings scored three runs in the first and eight
in the second. Again, the relief pitching excelled, as Samantha Thomas
did not allow an earned run in 3 2/3 innings in relief of Bunch. Bunch
scored MHS' only run and Winfield's Peters, one of the top pitchers in
Class 5A, did not permit the Bullpups a hit.
Doile said for a first game against a strong team, she wasn't too disappointed.
She noted she had a lot of players in new positions and it led to some
defensive letdowns at times.
Winfield won the JV games, 11-10 and 10-6. Laura Swisher pitched both games
for the Bullpups, and in the first game she walked four times and scored three
MHS runs. Jennifer Martin had two hits in the first game and Megan Thompson
had a double.
MHS stays on the road Tuesday playing at Valley Center.
