MHS sending 5 to state Staff Photo by Steve Sell State tennis qualifiers for McPherson High include, from left, Chelsea Ronsse, Paige Anderson, Amy Schlesinger, Jenna Rader and Amanda Gayer.By STEVE SELL, Sentinel Sports Editor Doug Gayer's goals never change going into a state tennis tournament. The longtime McPherson High coach and recent inductee into the McPherson College Hall of Fame always sets a goal for his players to win their opening-round match and then go from there. The Bullpups have been a major player at the Class 5A State Tournament, which gets under way Friday at Arkansas City. But even with five of his six players competing, the Bullpups probably won't be a factor in the team race, as Salina Central and Miege may turn it into their own personal showdown. Central, the expected favorite, had the top two finishers in both singles and doubles in its regional. Miege also had the top two finishers in singles, as well as the first- and third-place finishers in doubles at its regional. So Gayer is just hoping his team can do the best it can. "We want to win in the first round and have everybody playing on Saturday," he said. "We want everyone to have a chance to medal." MHS will get a good draw in doubles, as the team of junior Chelsea Ronsee and freshman Amanda Gayer (16-6) won a regional title Monday, meaning it will be one of the top four seeds. MHS also enters the senior tandem of Amy Schlesinger and Jenna Rader (26-11), who took third in the regional. Gayer said Kapaun, Salina Central and Miege all have talented doubles teams. Kapaun's all-freshman team of Gillian Hush and Kelly Gebert is a nationally ranked team in the summer. Junior Paige Anderson (12-10) is the Bullpups' singles entry. Arkansas City's Kali Krisik (25-0) has never lost in her three years of competition, and has never even lost a set during that time. |
