4th-graders at EES make donation to Red Cross By CHERYL TSCHUDIN, Sentinel News Editor Monday, October 24, 2005 1:39 PM CDT Students in Glenda Sims' fourth-grade class at Eisenhower Elementary School recently presented a gift of $138 to the American Red Cross to help with hurricane relief. Following the destruction caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, students discussed what they might do to help those who had lost so much in the storms, said Kari Webster, student teacher in Sims' class. They decided on a “penny drive,” placing a jar in the classroom to collect change. “Just in the first two or three days, the students brought in $105,” Webster said. The jar remained in the classroom for the following two weeks, bringing in another $33. The money collected by the 22 students was presented to Mark Hunter, chapter manager of the Sunflower Chapter of the American Red Cross, during a visit he made to the classroom. Hunter told students that the money would be used to help hurricane evacuees, who had come to this area after the storms, to return home and begin to reestablish their lives. The McPherson chapter of the Red Cross, said Hunter, provided aid to 15 families, which included 21 individuals who had come to the McPherson area since the storms. He noted that the local chapter recently has trained 11 people, nine of them new volunteers, and that there are 16 active local volunteers. He expressed his gratitude for the interest and generous contributions from the students and their families. |
