MHS has doubles team in semifinals
Saturday, October 15, 2005 8:22 AM CDT WICHITA -- McPherson High's Chelsea Ronsse and Amanda Gayer are back in the Final Four. The MHS duo, fourth in the Class 5A State Tennis Tournament last year, advanced to the elite quartet Friday by winning their first two matches. The semifinals were scheduled to begin this morning at 9:00. They opened with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Annie Doole and Ellen Dicus of Topeka West, and then knocked off Kapaun's Alex Latimer and Megan Schulte 6-4, 6-1 to set up a semifinal date with AVCTL rivals Amanda Morris and Alicia Smith of Salina Central, who have lost only one match all year. Paige Anderson is the other MHS player still alive. After losing 6-4, 6-4 to Winfield's Stacie Schoon in the first round, she came back for a 9-1 win over Jamie Evans of Topeka Seaman. In the next round, she lost to Kapaun's Kelly Gebert 9-0, who was a regional champion. Anderson is in the battle for 9th through 12th place. Shelby Horton lost her two singles matches, 6-1, 6-1 to Gebert and 9-4 to Teri Hopkins of Topeka West. The doubles team of Carlie Copeland and Hanna Heidebrecht also went 0-2, falling to Molly Martin and Grace Eisenhauer of Salina Central (6-1, 6-2) and Ceri Scrafford and Sarah Scrafford of Carroll (9-1). |
