McPherson High kickers stay perfect

Published: Friday, September 14, 2007 12:04 PM CDT

NEWTON -- It was supposed to be the first of a brutal three-game gauntlet for the McPherson High soccer team.

But the expected showdown here Thursday between MHS and Newton never materialized, as the Bullpups continued their stunning season-long domination.

Taylor Davis scored just 63 seconds into the game and the Bullpups were off and running for a 5-0 victory in a key AVCTL Division II clash.

The Bullpups are now 6-0 overall and have yet to allow a goal, as they have outscored their opponents, 39-0.

“Newton is probably the strongest team we've played so far, certainly the quickest,” MHS coach Jim Post said. “We talked about coming out and scoring an early goal, which we did. The good thing is we didn't play as well as we could play, but the defense was just so good. Greg (goalie Loving) had to face only one shot.”

Davis also scored the second goal and Ben Schwindt added another before the half was over.

In the second half, Schwindt added his second goal and Frazier completed the scoring. Shawn Buckbee had two assists, while Frazier and Chad Nieman had one.

The statistics reflected the Bullpups' stranglehold on the game, as they had 16 shots to just one for Newton.

The Bullpups also moved closer to the AVCTL title, as they are now 3-0, with games still to play against Valley Center and Winfield.

The Bullpups have a huge week coming up, as they are home Tuesday against Maize, a game where emotions always seem to run high. That's followed by a Thursday game at Salina Central, a team that had the Bullpups' number last year.

The MHS JVs also remained undefeated, 2-0. Bart Hageman and Evan Bissell scored the goals.
