Poem

It is the end of summer and fall is coming,
The leaves are changing colors and the weather is becoming cooler.
This is my favorite time of year,
When the earth is changing colors and moving into another season.
My name is Maija and I am the Indian chief’s daughter.
My tribe is the Pawnee tribe,
The tribe of the toughest warriors in the land.
We live in the middle of the Pawnee woods,
Where nobody can disturb us.
Sometimes I like to get away from it all,
And go canoeing down the river to relax.
I go to a place that only I know, no one else.
I come here when I feel alone and helpless.
It makes me feel better when I come here.
Sometimes I stay over night because it is so peaceful there.
Then I go back home because that is where I belong.
I have no mother figure to look up to,
Just my father, who never has time to be with me.
My mother died when I was young.
She was killed by our worst enemy, the Pueblo Indians.
My father misses her very much,
But he doesn’t know how to talk to me.
He says I remind him too much of her.
Every time we try to talk we either fight or cry.
I have no other family to love,
I only have friends to talk to.
The animals are my friends.
They are always there to listen to me and protect me.
I am looking for my purpose in life,
Why am I here?
What should I be doing?
Am I fulfilling my destiny on this earth?
What is my destiny?
