Kindergarten Here We Come . . .
 

Ways to help your child get ready for kindergarten:

  • Let your child do as much for him/herself as possible, such as self-care skills and family "chores".
  • Help your child solve problems--Do not solve a problem for him/her, but ask "What we do about this?"
  • Encourage children to help each other and to ask for help.
  • Teach children to watch other people to see how to do something.
  • Give children chances to talk and to listen in a group. 

Basic skills to help your child in kindergarten:

A. Getting along with other children

  • Shares objects and takes turns
  • Shows feelings in acceptable ways


B. Playing and working

  • Plays and works alone or with other children
  • Stays with an activity for a length of time
  • Completes a task
  • Follows spoken directions with several steps
  • Follows group and individual instructions


C. Personal Care and responsibility

  • Puts own things in backpack
  • Gets notes home and to school
  • Cleans up own work area


D. Learning new skills

  • Has courage and desire to try new things.
  • Watches others or asks for help.
  • Asks and answers questions.
  • Sits and listens for brief periods.
  • Is willing to talk in a group.
  • Reacts appropriately to changes in routines.

E. Self-help skills

  • Putting on and zipping coat.
  • Putting on shoes.
  • Using bathroom without help.
