High School Band, Choir, and Orchestra Regional and State Musical Festival Results

It was a memorable festival season for the McPherson High School Music Dept this spring.  Considering Regional and State Music Festivals are at the height of all high school spring sport's competitions it's truly remarkable what our music students accomplished.  To gain a little "time-frame" perspective, our entire Regional & State competition schedule was condensed to just two weeks, beginning on April 14th and ending on April 28th.

As directors, we could tell it was going to be a special season when 9 ensembles and 22 soloists earned superior ratings at KSHSAA Regional Solo & Small Ensemble Festival in Great Bend, KS, making them eligible for the State Solo & Small Ensemble Festival.  As a department, it was a wonderful day, but unfortunately not one we could celebrate for long due to the quick turn-around for KSHSAA State Large Group (performing ensembles larger than 25 students). State Large Group took place Wednesday, April 18th at Smoky Valley High School in Lindsborg, KS...just four short days after Regionals.

The MHS Orchestra started Large Group Competition with a performance of "A Quiet Music" by Douglas Wagner and "Vortex" by Robert Longfield.  Shortly after their performance, they received the news...a Superior (1) rating!

Soon after, a little way down the road at the Bethany Lutheran Church the MHS Women's Choir performed "Et In Terra Pax" by Victor C. Johnson and "Can You Hear" by Franciso J. Nunez.  After the performance...a Superior (1) rating.
Next, it was the MHS Select Women's Choir who performed "Hello Girls" by Lloyd Pfautsch and "Even When He Is Silent" by Kim Andre Arnesen.  After the performance a Superior (1) rating. Next in line was the MHS Concert Choir.  The judges chose to have us perform: "Gabi, Gabi" by Victor C. Johnson and "Deep Peace" by Brian Tate.  Our choice was "Come To My Heart" by Laura Farnell.  After their performance, a Superior (1) rating.

The MHS Band was one of the last groups to perform.  Their pieces were "Hebrides Suite" by Claire Grundman and "Aria di Chiesa" arr. by Fraschillo.  After their performance...you guessed it a Superior (1) rating.

A department sweep of Superior (1) ratings.  It hasn't happened in at least 4 or 5 years, so it is rare but very, very special!

Finally, the last weekend in April (4/28) our State Solo & Small Ensemble qualifiers traveled to Larned, KS.  On the way to Larned around 7:00am our bus broke down, and thankfully enough we had help from several parents that were trailing us and from the Smoky Valley HS Bus that happened to be trailing us as well.  We are so grateful for their hospitality, and even more so for the fact that we didn't have to adjust our entire day to accommodate the travel scare that morning.

Somehow, even with unnerving bus experience, our high schoolers took care of business and we couldn't be more proud of how they represented McPherson HS at KSHSAA State Solo & Small Ensemble!  Their results are below:

We are so grateful for Ms. Tiffiney Harms, Dr. Brett Janssen, and Mrs. Jeanne Whitenack for supporting and collaborating with all of our students via piano accompaniment.  We couldn't have done it without you.  Thank you for making this year such a memorable year for so many of our students.

You can catch the MHS Band in action at the Annual May Day Parade on Fri, May 11th.  Both the MHS Orchestra and MHS Choir have their final concerts Monday, May 14th at McPherson HS @ 6:00pm and 7:30pm.
